The city’s first free school, West Newcastle Academy, is gearing up to open to a new reception class in September after being given the all clear in their pre-opening Ofsted inspection
Opening on September 3rd with a single reception class, the school will occupy a temporary site in the visitor’s centre in Benwell Nature Park during the first year.
Designs are being drawn up for the main school which will eventually have a capacity for around 200 children, if approved by planners the new build will commence early in 2014 on land adjacent to Armstrong road in Benwell.
Headteacher Susan Percy said:
“We’re really excited that following 3 years of planning we are so close to opening, the news that Ofsted have given us the all clear is the final seal of approval.
“Parents and carers of 27 children have confirmed places; we only have one place remaining to fill.
“Work is underway to refurbish our temporary school site in Benwell Nature Park, which will be our home for the first year.
“New staff have been recruited, furniture and resources have been ordered, everything is taking shape.
“The nature reserve really fits in with our philosophy of outdoor learning; the children will also spend 2 days a week learning in a natural environment in Thornley woods.
“Admissions for places for reception in 2014 will open soon, parents interested in finding out more can come along to our open day at Benwell Nature Park on Atkinson Road, Saturday 28th of September between 10am and 1pm, email firstname.lastname@example.org or phone 0191 2425407 to request a prospectus
